Customs Seize N5.1m Contraband, Generates N59bn in Six Months

The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has said that no fewer than N51.1 million worth of different contraband was seized in multiple operations within the command area just as the agency generated N59 billion in revenue to the federation account in six months.

This was disclosed in a statement made available on Sunday via the agency’s verified handle on X (formerly Twitter).

According to the statement, the contraband items that were seized include Cannabis Sativa weighing 777.5 kilogrammes and a Dane gun, among other items, while noting that the illicit drugs will be handed over to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further action.

The statement read in parts, “The Nigeria Customs Service Oyo/Osun Command has intercepted Cannabis Sativa (Marijuana), a Dane gun, and other items worth over N51.1 million.

“Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, revealed in a press briefing on Friday, 10 November 2023, that the command seized 64 sacks and 150 compressed Cannabis Sativa from various areas within its jurisdiction.

“Other confiscated items include 1,248 (50kg) of parboiled rice, 425 (25 litres) of PMS, 24 bales of used clothing, and 1 used bag. The total weight of the illegal substances is 777.5kg, and they will be handed over to the NDLEA on Friday, November 10, 2023.”
