The beauty of Ibadan’s greatness lies not only in its ancient walls and brave sons, but also in the noble hearts that sustain its people through acts of selfless giving. One of such rare hearts is that of Chief Dotun Sanusi, the Okanlomo Oodua and Bada Olubadan-designate, a man whose life has become a continuing story of compassion, investment in humanity, and faith in the possibilities of the younger generation.
My earliest personal impression of Chief Sanusi was during our 2022 initiative under the Ibadan Youth-Indigenes Association for Development (IYI), themed “Exploring Tourism for Oyo State Economic Development.” His swift and gracious support towards the programme reaffirmed his deep-rooted belief in the capacity of Ibadan youth to drive development through innovation, unity, and heritage preservation. His gesture came through the guidance of Asiwaju (Dr.) Nurudeen Akinade, Mogaji Onilari, my brother, leader, and mentor — a man whose bridge-building spirit continues to connect the youth with the custodians of our city’s values.
Dr. Akinade’s consistent commitment to uplifting the Association of Mogajis of IbadanLand (AMIL) and empowering young professionals remains worthy of record. Through his coordination and advocacy, the relationship between the traditional institution and the youth has grown stronger. His support in advancing causes like ours demonstrates the enduring bond between the old and new guard of Ibadan leadership.
Working closely with the Land Mediation Committee chaired by Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, where I serve as a Surveyor-Technician and Consultant, I have come to appreciate even more the depth of Chief Sanusi’s contributions to peace and communal harmony. Mogaji Ariori, a man known for his forthrightness, never hesitates to commend the Okanlomo Oodua for his relentless commitment to Ibadan’s progress and for lending his influence to the stabilization and mediation efforts across the land.
In comparing Chief Sanusi’s philanthropic drive to that of the late Chief Mufutau Ajadi Lanihun, one must tread with reverence. Late Chief Lanihun was not just a philanthropist; he was a father-figure to generations, a symbol of grassroots empowerment, and a legend of Ibadan generosity. His benevolence touched the poor, the privileged, and the powerful alike. He gave hope to families, sponsored education, supported trade, and helped countless individuals find their footing in life.
Lanihun’s philanthropy was a movement, quiet, constant, and deeply human. He believed that wealth was a trust and that to be blessed is to become a blessing. He represented an era when the rich were not defined by possessions, but by purpose; not by noise, but by noble deeds.
Chief Dotun Sanusi appears to be walking in that same noble path, though with a renewed and modernized approach. His philanthropy is not limited to financial donations; it extends to social investment, youth empowerment, education, tourism, and heritage development. His vast business empire, particularly the transformation of Ilaji Resort into a symbol of leisure, culture, and employment, reflects a vision that combines commerce with community service.
He supports initiatives that promote unity among the Mogajis, backs youth projects without discrimination, and continually invests in human capital. His kind of giving is strategic , not just to alleviate poverty, but also to awaken potential. His understanding of philanthropy goes beyond helping individuals; it is about strengthening systems, promoting peace, and preserving the identity of Ibadan as a city of character and courage.
In Chief Sanusi, Ibadan sees a living bridge between tradition and transformation. Oloye Sanusi is a man who has mastered the art of giving without seeking applause, who quietly supports causes that build people and institutions.
As he marks his 57th birthday anniversary on earth, it is only fitting to appraise not just his achievements, but his heart. His generosity has become a philosophy; his philanthropy, a cultural duty. He has shown that it is possible for the living to surpass legends, not by competing, but by continuing the work of goodness with deeper conviction and wider impact.
May his example inspire other well-meaning sons and daughters of Ibadan to rise above self-interest and invest in humanity. May the legacy of the late Chief Mufutau Ajadi Lanihun remain evergreen, and may the spirit of service embodied by Chief Dotun Sanusi continue to illuminate Ibadanland and beyond.
Happy 57th Birthday, Chief Dotun Sanusi, the Okanlomo Oodua, the Bada Olubadan-designate, a pride of Ibadan, and a beacon of modern philanthropy.
