Agriculture: Senator Kyari in Pivotal Partnership with Flour Milling Association to Advance Local Wheat Production

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, during a factory inspection tour, held significant talks with representatives from the Flour Milling Association of Nigeria (FMAN) to discuss collaborative efforts in advancing local wheat production in Nigeria. Members of the FMAN present at the inspection exercise were: the National Programme Manager of the Association, Dr Aliyu Samaila; the Association’s Agronomist, Ahmed Tijjani Abdullahi; and the Area Manager, Kano Warehouse, Abdul Balarabe.

As a vital component of its backward integration program, the Flour Milling Association of Nigeria is dedicated to bolstering local wheat production in the country. The comprehensive program encompasses the following key areas:

  1. Outgrower Program: FMAN is actively engaged in supporting and empowering local outgrowers to cultivate wheat, thereby enhancing their livelihoods and contributing to the nation’s food security.
  2. Seed Production Program: FMAN, in collaboration with several esteemed seed companies and the National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC), is spearheading the development of a robust and sustainable wheat seed system in Nigeria.
  3. Research and Development: FMAN recognizes the critical importance of research and development in the advancement of wheat production. The association is committed to fostering innovation and best practices in this sector.
  4. Demonstration Plot Establishment: FMAN is actively involved in establishing demonstration plots to showcase modern techniques and technologies for improved wheat cultivation.

In a groundbreaking move, FMAN had imported 250 metric tonnes of foundation seeds for the current season, a crucial step towards the production of certified wheat seeds within Nigeria. Additionally, FMAN is working closely with the Lake Chad Research Institute (LCRI) and the National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) to develop breeder seeds and foundations for all popular released wheat varieties in Nigeria, with the aim of reducing import reliance.

For the current season, FMAN boasts an impressive stockpile of over 1000 metric tonnes of seed, and is also extending support to the Federal Government’s efforts in procuring seeds for the national wheat program. This coordinated initiative will be executed under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

Furthermore, FMAN affirms its commitment to off-take all locally produced wheat in Nigeria. This resolute stance is in line with the association’s dedication to curbing imports and fostering the attainment of wheat self-sufficiency in Nigeria, aligning seamlessly with the President Bola Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Honourable Minister, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, expressed his profound appreciation for FMAN’s unwavering dedication to the advancement of local wheat production. He commended their tireless efforts and emphasized the pivotal role they play in realizing the vision of a self-sufficient and food-secure Nigeria.

Both parties look forward to a fruitful and collaborative partnership that will not only bolster the wheat industry but also contribute significantly to the overall agricultural landscape of Nigeria.
