Civil Society Organisations Move to Stall Corruption in Public Procurement in Nigeria

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) move to stall corruption in public procurement in Nigeria. In a spirited attempt to attenuate what it perceived as a cog in the wheels of public procurement, a group of concerned Civil Society have risen up to put a permanent cessation to the raging corruption in public procurement .

The group, which comprises frontline third sector practitioners like Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), African Network for Environment and Economic Justice, Environmental Development Agenda and is mainstreamed by the Procurement Observation and Advocacy initiative.

In a letter made available to our Abuja correspondent signed by the National Coordinator of PRADIN, Muhammad Bougei Attah states that procurement corruption has become a hiccup to the corruption in public sector which takes over 70% of the ills that had bedraggled public sector in the country today, which keeps assuming a frightening dimension inspite of all efforts to stem the tide.

Therefore, in order to pave way for the present administration led by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu to tide over corruption related problems in the public sector thus start on a good footing, the CSO groups have set to convene a National dialogue to advance a novel strategy to curb corruption in the public procurement system in Nigeria.

Major stakeholders have been invited to a one-day Roundtable to rub minds together on how best to explore a new strategy that will send the canckerworm to a psyche tomb.

Some of the invited stakeholders grouped into three categories of implementer, regulators and monitors are the Bureau of Public procurement, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply management of Nigeria. Others are the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Strategy Implementation Task Office for the Presidential Executive Order 5 and the Nigeria Society of Engineers.

The programme is slated for this week, Thursday August 24th , the event is expected to draw participants from the government, professional bodies and civil society groups to work in unison and fathom possible ways to put a permanent cessation to the menace .
