Customs Service Deploy Drones, Increase Personnel to End Illegal Transport of Food Through Borders

To combat food smuggling more effectively, the Nigeria Customs Service has enhanced efforts by deploying drones and increasing personnel to prevent the illegal transportation of food items to neighboring nations via approximately 1,500 known unauthorized border entry points.

Customs’ National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, said on Sunday that the NCS had bolstered its monitoring along the borders, including unauthorized entry points.

According to him, the progress aligns with the President’s instruction to security authorities to prevent food smuggling as a key step in addressing the food shortage in the country.

Given the declining value of the naira, traders specializing in grain are transporting grains and essential food items to Niger Republic, Chad, and Cameroon to capitalize on increased profitability.
